Why TV Spec Sheets Are Confusing — and How to Read Them
Walk through any TV listing and you'll encounter a wall of numbers: nits, Hz, HDR10, DCI-P3, FALD. These aren't meaningless — but manufacturers rarely explain what they measure, why they matter, or when one figure beats another. This glossary translates the most common display specifications into plain English so you can compare panels on facts rather than marketing language.

Core Display Terms Defined
The terms below appear on nearly every TV listing. Each definition focuses on what the number actually measures and what a higher or lower value means in practice.
Nits (cd/m²)
A measure of how much light a screen emits per square meter. Higher nit counts mean a brighter display, which is especially important for HDR content and well-lit rooms. One nit equals one candela per square meter.
Contrast Ratio
The ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black a display can produce simultaneously. A higher native contrast ratio means deeper blacks and more visual depth, particularly in dark scenes.
HDR (High Dynamic Range)
A video and display standard that expands the range between the darkest and brightest parts of an image. HDR-compatible content paired with an HDR-capable display produces more nuanced highlights and shadows than standard dynamic range (SDR).
Color Gamut
The range of colors a display can reproduce. Common reference spaces include sRGB (the standard for most web and broadcast content), DCI-P3 (used for cinema and HDR content), and Rec. 2020 (the wide-gamut target for future Ultra HD content).
Resolution
The total number of pixels a display contains, expressed as width × height. 4K Ultra HD (3840 × 2160) is the current mainstream standard; 8K (7680 × 4320) exists but has limited native content.
Refresh Rate (Hz)
How many times per second the display updates its image. A 60 Hz panel refreshes 60 times per second; 120 Hz panels can display smoother motion, which is relevant for sports, action content, and gaming.
Local Dimming
A technique where a TV dims or brightens specific zones of its LED backlight independently to improve contrast. Full-array local dimming (FALD) uses a grid of zones across the entire panel; edge-lit designs have fewer, less precise zones.
HDMI 2.1
The current high-bandwidth HDMI specification supporting 4K at 120 Hz, 8K at 60 Hz, and features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Required for next-generation console gaming at higher frame rates.
VRR (Variable Refresh Rate)
A feature that synchronizes the TV's refresh rate with the frame rate output of a connected gaming console or PC, reducing screen tearing and stuttering. Commonly implemented via HDMI 2.1's VRR standard.
Input Lag
The delay between a signal being sent to the TV (from a remote, game controller, or other device) and the corresponding image appearing on screen. Lower input lag — typically below 20 ms — matters most for interactive gaming.
Color Volume
A measure of how well a display maintains its color gamut across its full range of brightness levels. A TV with high color volume can produce vivid, accurate colors in both dark and bright portions of an image.
Upscaling
The process by which a TV's processor converts lower-resolution content (HD, Full HD) to fill a higher-resolution panel (4K, 8K). The quality of upscaling varies considerably between processors and affects how non-native content looks.

Specs That Deserve Extra Scrutiny
Not every figure on a spec sheet is measured consistently. A few areas where caution pays off:
- Peak brightness (nits): Manufacturers may quote the absolute maximum output under ideal, brief conditions — not sustained real-world brightness. That gap can be significant. What nits actually measure unpacks how these figures are tested and what to look for instead.
- Contrast ratio: "Dynamic contrast ratio" figures are often astronomically high and largely meaningless for everyday viewing. Native contrast ratio — the ratio measured without dynamic adjustments — is the more honest number.
- Local dimming: Listed as a simple on/off feature, local dimming varies enormously in effectiveness depending on backlight architecture. Full-array local dimming (FALD) uses a grid of LED zones behind the panel; edge-lit designs use LEDs along the screen border and have far less precise control. There is no single universal standard requiring TV makers to measure brightness, contrast, or color coverage in the same way. A nit figure from one manufacturer may be measured under different conditions than the same figure from another. Third-party lab reviews that test TVs under controlled, consistent conditions are generally a more reliable basis for comparison than spec-sheet numbers alone.
