Write Down Your Must-Have Criteria First
Before opening a single product page, list the features or qualities that are non-negotiable for your situation. Keep it to five or fewer items. These become the rows of your comparison grid. Once your grid is populated, do a simple pass: mark each cell as meets the need, partially meets it, or falls short. Read across each row — one criterion at a time — rather than down each product column. This prevents you from anchoring on a single product you're already leaning toward.
Any product with a 'falls short' mark on a must-have criterion is eliminated at this point, regardless of how it performs elsewhere.
Weigh the Nice-to-Haves and Make a Decision
If more than one product passes the must-have filter, compare them only on the nice-to-haves that remain. Give each a rough weight based on how much it would genuinely improve your experience. The product that clears the must-haves and scores highest on your weighted nice-to-haves is your answer. If two products are effectively tied, price or return policy is a reasonable tiebreaker.
Save Your Grid for Future Reference
Once you've made a purchase, keep the completed grid. If the product disappoints, you can check whether your criteria were the right ones or whether a data source misled you. Reading Specs Critically and Spotting Gaps
Spec sheets are written to impress, not to inform. A number that looks decisive — battery capacity, thread count, megapixels — may have little bearing on real-world performance.
